It's {pretty, happy, funny, real} Thursday over at Like Mother, Like Daughter. And over here at In My Kitchen, In My Life, we are decluttering/refreshing/cleaning our houses to start the year off right.
Wednesday's task was to make an improvement in a bathroom. I worked in our main floor half bath, where we have a vintage medicine cabinet over the sink and another vintage cabinet mounted above the toilet and just below a small, high window.
The medicine cabinet wasn't too bad to begin with, which makes me Happy:
Funny
Anybody need an ear syringe? (Gotta keep it. The Husband would have palpitations if it wasn't there. See? None of us has a perfect decluttering situation -- we must work within our relationships. For us, that means we keep the ear syringe. Even though we (he) never (practically) use it. Nevertheless. We have orthodontic wax -- 2 containers -- and we haven't had anybody in braces for more than a year.
Pretty
Yay -- medicine cabinet, er, healed:
Real
The extra cabinet appears not to have one side of it touched for some time:

This is a family heirloom. Vicks. Magical stuff. (Gotta keep it. The Wife would have palpitations if it wasn't there. Just working within our relationships here. Even though we practically never use it, she just feels better knowing it's there if she wants to smear on a little.)Here is a real relic! My, my -- this drugstore doesn't even exist anymore, and check out the date:
Happy
Much better! Now there is room for more extra rolls of the toilet paper everybody but me hates. 'Nother story, but we don't need to go into that here.I am so enjoying hearing about everyone's work to make their houses more pleasant spaces in which to live their lives.
About the toilet paper rolls...I am constantly bemoaning the fact that out of the ten people who live here, I am apparently the ONLY one who can figure out how to put a new roll on the holder. Really? I mean, they think they're heroes if they pull the TP out and set it ON TOP of the holder.
ReplyDeleteAnd I guess it's better than nothing.
Love the vintage. The cabinets, the Vicks, the silver whatever-it-is...
Isn't it the truth? I try to be grateful that they got more out at all, but sometimes it does get to me, too.
DeleteI tackled our one and only bathroom while the Littles played in the tub. It wasn't too bad. Still, I am throwing out a bottle of baby oil I have had since high school (that would be well over a decade old) and never ever use. I threw out all of the hair clips that don't fit my hair but came in a package with some that do. I hate throwing out perfectly good things, but honestly, what else could be done with them? I corralled a bajillion bobby pins into a ziploc. Did various organizing... it's much improved. Most satisfactory! Thanks for the nudge on this and all of the other!
ReplyDeletePS - I really hope you don't use 1-ply... Please say it's not true! ;)
How do we hang onto these things? Like we can't get another bottle of baby oil if we EVER decide we must have some. I moved that burn cream twice, and I know we haven't used it since the reason we first got the Rx in the first place when A. was two and burned her hand badly on the iron.
DeleteThat silver cream is great for burns and may not expire, though maybe after 20 years its lost some of its zip. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the old Vicks jar. It reminds me of my grandma. :)
My father's side of the family believe Vick's cures all ills. My mom's side of the family go with Watkins salve. I admit to using Watkins much more often, but I still need to hang onto my Vicks -- you just never know when there may be a Vicks emergency!
DeleteI spent most of yesterday working in our basement decluttering. I think I saved every stitch of clothing my kids ever wore with the plans that baby #4 (that we never had) could use them. It's been 7 1/2 years since a baby & it is time to get rid of them!!! I probably won't finish until some time next week, but even a little headway makes me smile when I go down there! :-)
ReplyDeleteGo, Stephanie! You are doing the heavy-duty, dirty decluttering. Well, maybe your basement isn't as dirty as mine -- ours is more of a cellar and there are always plenty of cobwebs, etc. down there. Still, baby clothes is emotionally heavy for many ladies. Glad for your headway -- smile away!
